Dr. Schummer is a native of Western New York and began teaching at UPB as an adjunct professor in 2004. He is an avid gardener and a strong supporter of sustainable agriculture, economic regionalism, and community self-reliance. Schummer has extensive first-hand experience in organic farming practices, having served for 3 years as Assistant Farm Manager and Education Coordinator for Canticle Farm in Allegany, NY. He also enjoys fishing & hunting, woodworking, raising chickens, and spending time with his canine companions (he does not appreciate cats).
Dr. Schummer teaches a variety of philosophy courses, including Intro to Philosophy, Intro to Environmental Studies, Ethics, Bioethics, Food & Societies, Philosophy & Public Issues, Political Philosophy, Metaphysics & Epistemology, and Environmental Ethics. His professional development is focused on Applied Virtue Ethics (especially virtue-based ecological ethics), Ancient & Early Modern Philosophy, and Aesthetics.
