The Hanley Library will host a virtual viewing of author Antonia Hylton, a Peabody and Emmy award-winning journalist who wrote Madness: Race and Insanity in a Jim Crow Asylum. This text chronicles Crownsville Hospital's ninety-three-year history and the stories of Black families whose mental health suffered as they tried, and sometimes failed, to find safety and dignity.
Note: The content in this investigative journalism text includes the harsh and painstaking realities of the mistreatment and oppression of Black people during the Jim Crow era and beyond. Content includes: mental illness, systemic racism, sexual assault, forced institutionalization and confinement, brutality, drug use, death, and grief.
The virtual viewing of the author and a post-discussion will be hosted on Wednesday, February 12, at 6 PM in Blaisdell 138. Dr. Jean Truman has agreed to co-host the post-discussion.
