Has gym or health class always been your favorite? Would you like to lead your own health or gym class one day? Our health and physical education major will help you get there.

In our program, you'll study education - of course. But you'll also learn about psychology, nutrition, personal health and wellness, and living well. You can play on one of our 15 sports teams. Or help out with one of them. And, you'll be on a campus that is surrounded by physical-fitness opportunities. You can hike. Bike. Run. Ski.

With your degree and your teaching certification, you'll have many career choices. Teach at an elementary or secondary school. Coach a team. Be a personal trainer. Or, you could teach young people who have physical challenges

What you can do with a degree in Health and Physical Education. Suggested 4-year plan of study.

    Please be advised

Please be advised that some programs or courses of study require that students complete rotations, fieldwork, internships/externships and/or teaching assignments at facilities external to the university, while other programs or courses of study may offer voluntary internships or externships at facilities external to the university. Depending on the program or course, such facilities will or may require a criminal background check, an act 33/34 clearance (if applicable), and perhaps a drug screen to determine participant qualification or eligibility. Additionally, in order to become licensed, many states will inquire as to whether the applicant has been convicted of a misdemeanor, a felony, or a felonious or illegal act associated with alcohol and/or substance abuse.

You need to formally apply to be admitted to the teacher certification program after you complete 48 credits.

Requirements for admission include successfully passing the appropriate basic skills assessments, maintaining a 3.0 overall GPA and receiving no lower than a C- in any course required in the major.  Three letters of recommendation as well as a Career Goals Statement are part of the application process. Admission to the program does not guarantee certification but the program is designed to help teacher candidates meet the Pennsylvania Department of Education teacher certification requirements.
