National First-Gen College Celebration Day
Nov. 8 is National First-Generation College Celebration Day
If you’re a first-generation college student – neither of your parents earned a four-year college or university degree – you’re in good company. Nearly 50% of our students are first-gen. Many of our faculty and staff are first-gen, too.
We celebrate the accomplishments and determination of all of our first-gen students, and we’re here to answer your questions, give you guidance, provide academic resources and remind you that you belong here.
Here’s what a few of our campus community members have to say about being first-gen.
“My time at Pitt-Bradford has molded me today. I have been able to pay it forward by mentoring and encouraging fellow first-gen students, showing them that with determination and the right support system, they, too, can achieve their academic goals.” – Chanelle Shoemake, a double major in economics and business management from Philadelphia
Take joy in your triumphs, shrug off your defeats, and always find time to laugh and enjoy lifeGarrett Martin, resident director
“As a first-generation student, I felt like I was trying to do everything in the dark. Little setbacks were huge frustrations. … I have made it my life’s work to give back by shining the light for others to become the best version of themselves – whatever that might be.” – Dr. Jody Burns, assistant professor of sport and recreation management
