2016 Baily's Beads to be unveiled Wednesday

The staff of the Baily's Beads, will unveil the 21st edition of the magazine at the Annual Literary Magazine Celebration Wednesday evening.

The staff of the Baily's Beads, will unveil the 21st edition of the magazine at the Annual Literary Magazine Celebration Wednesday evening.

The celebration, which is free and open to the public and includes refreshments, prizes and an open mic, will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the Mukaiyama University Room of the Frame-Westerberg Commons.

The editors of the 2016 issue worked to create “a professional new appearance with the incorporation of a permanent log design and format that will be recognizable from year to year,” Salynda Hogsett, a writing major from Halifax, and Amy Gaberseck-Hughes, an interdisciplinary arts major from Smethport, wrote in their editors' note.

The issue features two profiles of campus and community members and a tribute poem to Edgar Allen Poe.

Staff members included Kayla Beers '15; Selese Huth '15; Megan Whisennand, an interdisciplinary arts major from Lewis Run; Jaclyn Giacobbi, a history-political science major from Allison Park; Daniel Tennies '15; Patrick Kirk, a writing major from York; Elizabeth Burkholder, a writing major from Lebanon; Colin Almeida, a writing major from North Wales; Christina Smith, a writing major from Bradford; Stephanie McFall, a biology major from Smethport; Shahada Thomas, a writing major from Slidell, La.; and Noah Hurrle, a writing major from Bradford.

Faculty advisers were Dr. Nancy McCabe, professor of writing and director of the writing program; Carol Newman, instructor of writing; and Anna Lemnitzer, assistant professor of art; with technical assistance from Dr. James Salvo, assistant professor of speech.

The celebration will also recognize the first place with special merit award the 2015 issue received from the American Scholastic Press Association. Judges gave the issue 965 points out of a possible 1,000 and perfect scores on design, presentation and creativity.

The judges wrote, “Your magazine shows the superior efforts of talented and creative editors, writers, artists and photographers, layout and graphic designers, staff members and advisor. … Baily's Beads is a model for up-and-coming magazines and an inspiration for those magazines that haven't quite aced the necessary skills.”

Editors of the 2015 issue were Beers, Huth and McKayla Murdock, a public relations major from Downingtown.
