Academics, arts and athletic camps planned for summer

Pitt-Bradford will offer a variety of academic, arts and athletic camps this summer for students in second grade through age 16.

The first camp, Pot-Pot-Pottery, is for students ages 10-16 and will be held from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. June 6-10 in the ceramics studio on campus. Students will learn hand building and coil construction and glaze and fire their work to take home. Cost of the camp is $89.

During the week of June 13-16 Youth Writing Spectacular, a creative writing camp for students age 9-14, will take place from 9 to 11:30 a.m. in Room 158 of the Richard E. and Ruth McDowell Sport and Fitness Center.

Students will develop their talent and passion for writing fiction, nonfiction and poetry and share their work with fellow writers, friends and family during a reading at 6 p.m. June 16 in the Harriett B. Wick Chapel. Cost of the camp is $79.

A new camp this year will be Game Programming for ages 10-16, taught by Computer Information Systems and Technology instructor Jeremy Callinan. Students will meet from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. June 20-23 in Swarts Hall Room 236 and use JavaScript to learn videogame programming.

Students will interact with Minecraft characters, create their own Flappy Bird game, join characters in a quest, create digital art and program droids in Star Wars. Students will also be introduced to Code.org, a free website that students can use to continue their learning. Cost of the camp is $69.

In July, Television Studio Production for ages 10-16 will teach students how to create television news broadcasts, puppet shows and other types of programs in a multi-camera digital studio. Jeff Guterman, associate professor of broadcast communications, will teach students about the roles both behind and in front of the camera and how to perform and produce, direct, and serve as a studio production assistant.

The camp takes place from 9 a.m. to noon July 13-14 in the television studio in Blaisdell Hall. Cost is $59.

Photography 101 for ages 10-16 will be offered from 8:30 to 11 a.m. July 19-21 in Room 158 of the Sport and Fitness Center. Students should bring their camera or smart phone to learn about taking photos outdoors and indoors, what makes a good photo even better and how to take photos from different angles and viewpoints. Cost of the camp is $69.

ArtXperience is a camp for students age 10-15 from 8:30 to 11 a.m. July 25-27 in room 604 of the Seneca Building at 2 Main St. in Bradford. Led by instructor Courtney Mealy, students will delve into a new medium each day. Projects will include abstract wire sculptures, a pet or animal portrait and mixed-media project. Cost of the camp is $69.

The final offering is a return of the popular Pets 'n' Vets Camp Aug. 16-18 for campers who have completed grades 1 through 6. Students who have completed grades 1, 2 or 3 meet from 8:30 a.m. to noon in Room 106D of Fisher Hall. Those who have completed grades 4, 5 or 6 attend from 1:30 to 5 p.m.
