Bailys Beads named Most Outstanding College Magazine
The staff of the campus’s literary magazine, Baily’s Beads, will have two reasons to celebrate next week – its third year in a row being awarded the American Scholastic Press Association’s Most Outstanding College Magazine and the unveiling of its 2013 issue.
The staff of the campus’s literary magazine, Baily’s Beads, will have two reasons to celebrate next week – its third year in a row being awarded the American Scholastic Press Association’s Most Outstanding College Magazine and the unveiling of its 2013 issue.
The unveiling will take place at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 23 in the Mukaiyama University Room and is free and open to the public. It will feature refreshments, readings and an open mic for those wishing to share their original work. The staff will present awards for the best writing in the magazine and recognize the 2012 issue and its staff.
“We received a perfect score in three categories, including content and design,” said Dr. Nancy McCabe, associate professor of writing and advisor for the magazine. “This was one of the best and most efficient staffs I have ever worked with. Everyone did his or her part, and the issue fell into place easily, which doesn’t always happen. And we’re really honored to receive this recognition for the third time in a row.”
Co-editors for the 2012 edition were Seth Cheatle, a December graduate in English from St. Marys, and James Segee, a writing major from Bradford.
The 2013 issue was edited by Cheatle.
“We had so many submissions with ‘dark’ themes that it led to a film noir-inspired cover,” McCabe said, adding that the final product, however, contains a wide range of subjects, genres, themes and tones with especially strong poetry and creative nonfiction by students, alumni, faculty and staff.
“There’s a story about a tattoo by a faculty member, some brave and intense essays about difficult topics by some current students and a memoir about a Coast Guard rescue by a community member,” she said.
