Campus to hold academic, athletic and arts camps for kids and teens

Arts camps will be Pot-Pot-Pottery, Painting for Young Artists, Youth Writing Spectacular and Crafty Kids Camp.

Academic camps for elementary-age students will be X-treme Science Camp and Pets 'n' Vets. Pre-teen and teen-age students can enjoy CSI: You are the Detective and Television Studio Production, both of which are taught by Pitt-Bradford faculty members.

Men's head basketball coach Britt Moore will offer two sessions of basketball camp.

Camps begin as soon as school lets out in Pennsylvania. Children age 10-16 will work with clay in Pot-Pot-Pottery! They will learn hand building and coil construction and will glaze and fire their work to take home. Children should wear comfortable clothing that they don't mind getting clay on. Two sessions will be offered in the ceramics studio on campus: 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. from June 8 through 12 and June 22 through 26. The cost is $89 for the first camper and $79 for additional campers and includes materials.

CSI 101: You are the Detective for students age 10 through 16 will provide an introduction to the criminal justice system, case law, obtaining and writing search and arrest warrants while conducting an investigation. Using world-class criminal forensic resources and equipment, campers will investigate mock crime scenarios at the Crime Scene Investigation House on campus under the guidance of Dr. Tony Gaskew, associate professor of criminal justice and an expert in the field of policing and criminal investigations. Classes are from 8:30 a.m. to noon June 8 through 11 and meet each day in Room 111 of Fisher Hall. The cost is $89 for the first camper and includes materials. Additional children pay $79.

During the same week, men's basketball head coach Britt Moore will offer the first of two co-ed basketball camps for students entering grades 3 through 11. Sessions will be offered from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 8 through 11 and Aug. 10 through 13 in the Richard E. and Ruth McDowell Sport and Fitness Center. The cost of each session is $125 per camper. Campers may bring their own lunch or purchase pizza, hot dogs, snacks and drinks at the concession stand. Swimming will also be available. On Saturday, June 13, the first of three Painting for Young Artists classes will be offered for children age 7 to 14 from 9 a.m. to noon June 13, June 20 and July 11. In each class, children will work on a different painting, and all supplies will be provided. Classes are $25 each per child.

The following week, the popular X-Treme Science Camp for students entering grades 2 through 7 will teach them about different areas of science, including plants, birds, stream life, water quality, chemistry, physical science and more. Guest presenters will visit each day. Classes will take place from 8:30 a.m. to noon daily June 15 through 19. The cost is $89 for the first camper and includes materials. Additional campers are $75 each.

During the same week, Dr. Dani Weber will lead the Youth Writing Spectacular creative writing camp for writers age 9 through 14 who want to develop their talent and passion for writing fiction, nonfiction and poetry. The camp will take place from 8:30 to 11 a.m. June 15 through 18 in the Sport and Fitness Center with an "open mic" celebration from 6 to 8 p.m. June 18 in the Harriett B. Wick Chapel. The cost is $79 for the first camper and $69 for each additional child.

A third choice for students that week is Crafty Kids Camp for children age 9 through 14. Campers will take home a different completed craft each day. Classes will be held from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. June 15 through 18 in the first floor art room of the Seneca Building at 2 Main St., Bradford. The cost is $89 for the first camper and $79 for each additional camper and includes the cost of supplies.

In July, Jeff Guterman, associate professor of communications and director of the broadcast communications program, will open the Pitt-Bradford television studio to students age 10-16 for Television Studio Production. Students will learn how to create television news broadcasts and other types of programs in a real-life, multi-camera digital studio environment. Students will learn about roles in front of and behind the camera and how to perform for the moving image as well as produce, direct and serve as a studio production assistant. The class will take place from 9 a.m. to noon July 15 and 16 and costs $59 for the first camper and $49 for each additional child.
