Haley to receive President's Award for Excellence

Dr. Tammy Haley, associate professor of nursing, will receive the President's Award for Excellence in Teaching, Scholarship and Service at commencement exercises May 1.

Dr. Livingston Alexander, president of Pitt-Bradford, will present Haley with the award, which was created to recognize faculty who perform at the highest level in the principal areas of faculty responsibility: teaching, scholarship and service.

“Dr. Haley epitomizes what we had in mind when we established an award to recognize all-around faculty excellence,” said Dr. Livingston Alexander, president of the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford.

“While maintaining current with new developments in her discipline and profession, Dr. Haley exhorts our nursing students to become disciplined learners and master the clinical skills needed to deliver the highest quality health care to patients.”

Haley, who has been teaching at Pitt-Bradford since 2003, is the director of nursing and radiological sciences programs.

She was nominated for the award by Dr. David Merwine, associate professor of biology, who said that her teaching effectiveness scores are outstanding. In their teaching evaluations, students said that she was organized, easy to approach and interested in student success.

“She is really good at being able to simplify terms and make material easy to comprehend,” wrote one student.

Haley was the 2012 recipient of the Chairs' Faculty Teaching Award, which is selected by the chairmen and chairwomen of Pitt-Bradford's five academic divisions.

In service to the university, Haley has overseen upgrades to the nursing simulation lab, created new handbooks for nursing faculty and students, and assisted with the nursing program's successful reaccreditation by the National League of Nursing Accreditation.

She also devotes time as a volunteer on numerous endeavors in the Bradford community, such as Zonta International.

As a scholar, Haley has published papers in The Journal of School Nursing, Journal of Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Nursing and Journal of Child Health Care. She has been an invited reviewer for such peer-reviewed journals as Sex Education, The Journal of School Nursing and Child Psychiatry and Human Development.

Haley holds certifications as a registered nurse and registered nurse practitioner. Before she began teaching at Pitt-Bradford, she served as a nurse, primarily in pediatrics. In 2012, she earned her doctorate in nursing from the University of Pittsburgh, where she also earned a Master of Public Health degree in 2013. Her doctoral dissertation was “Personal, Environmental and Behavioral Factors Influencing Condom Use in Rural Youth.”

She is the second recipient of the President's Award for Excellence. The inaugural winner was Dr. Om Singh, associate professor of biology.

Haley lives in Bradford.
