Dr. Nancy McCabe's memoir “From Little Houses to Little Women: Revisiting a Literary Childhood” is now available in paperback.
The book was the fourth of the Pitt-Bradford writing professor's four memoirs. First published in 2014 by the University of Missouri Press, the book explores the literature of McCabe's youth through trips to the settings for books by Laura Ingalls Wilder, Lucy Maud Montgomery, Maud Hart Lovelace and others.
“My press's publicist told me early on that the book was selling so well that a paperback edition was likely, so I was gratified when the paperback came out earlier this spring,” McCabe said. “It has been an amazing opportunity to meet people from a lot of different backgrounds (including Japanese fans) who felt connected to these books and hear their stories and impressions.”
McCabe said that the book's appearance in 2014 led to publications in several anthologies, most notably an excerpt in an anthology of writing about Nancy Drew and a book release party with other writers in Toronto.
The book also led to a two-year blog on travel and literature for the literary magazine Ploughshares and invitations to write for the Los Angeles Review of Books, the official Little House on the Prairie website, and more than 20 guest posts and blog interviews.
Following the book's publication, McCabe gave interviews related to “Anne of Green Gables” and “Little Women” with various media, including the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. and North Dakota Public Radio.
McCabe has also been in demand as a presenter at children's literature conferences, one as a keynote speaker and two as one of a few featured speakers. She also organized a book signing with six of the world's premiere Wilder scholars and biographers in Springfield, Mo.
Additionally, the Barnes and Noble 2018 Desk Diary featured a quote from McCabe about Wilder placed prominently on the first page.
McCabe is the director of the writing program at Pitt-Bradford and is the author of four other books, “After the Flashlight Man: A Memoir of Awakening,” “Meeting Sophie: A Memoir of Adoption,” “Crossing the Blue Willow Bridge: A Journey to my Daughter's Birthplace in China,” and “Following Disasters.”
