BRADFORD, Pa. – The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford’s annual One World Cultural Festival will take place Saturday with a theme of “A Celebration of Home – Away from Home.”
Indie rock artist Lijie will be the featured performer at 8:30 p.m. Performances by the student group the Diamond Steppers and student singing groups begin at 8 p.m.
Festivities for the popular event will take place from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. in the Frame-Westerberg Commons on campus. A donation of $5 will be accepted at the door from members of the public to cover the cost of cuisine from around the globe at themed sampling stations as well as entertainment.
Food from a variety of regions will be available, with many of the authentic recipes coming from students, faculty and staff members serving on the Cultural Festival Planning Committee.
Along with performances and food tasting, there will be displays and booths with hands-on activities for all age groups.
Planned activities include creating dream catchers with Habitat for Humanity, making friendship bracelets with LaCasa, a drum circle with Faith Tanner and basket weaving with the Division of Behavioral and Social Sciences.
Born in China and raised in the United States, Lijie began writing little melodies as a girl, but never took her songwriting seriously. It wasn’t until college, when a roommate brought a guitar into their room, that she began honing her songwriting skills.
Now she regularly performs at colleges, clubs, coffee shops and street corners in Los Angeles, New York, Austin, London and more. Songs from her albums Roam and The Music Maker have received recognition at the United Kingdom Songwriting Contest and have been used in various indie films and documentaries.
She is based in Brooklyn, New York, and is working on her third album.
The Cultural Festival is an annual effort of a committee of more than 20 students, faculty and staff members who coordinate the event. It is co-sponsored by the Student Government Association, Student Activities Council, Office of the President, Pitt-Bradford’s five academic divisions, academic affairs, student affairs and Metz Culinary Management.
