PBAA to honor Proper '89, Kallenbach

The Pitt-Bradford Alumni Association will honor alumnus Fred Proper '89 and Ernest Kallenbach, assistant professor of accounting, during its Alumni and Family Weekend Sept. 30-Oct. 2.

Proper will accept the PBAA's Denny Lowery Distinguished Volunteer Award, while Kallenbach will receive the alumni association's Teaching Excellence Award.

Both will be recognized at the PBAA Alumni Awards Dinner and Athletic Hall of Fame Induction at 5 p.m. Oct. 1 in the Mukaiyama University Room. The cost is $25 for adults, $12 for children 6 to 12 and free for children 5 and under. For registration, visit upbalumni.org/afw or call 814-362-5091.

Proper has been a long-time volunteer with PBAA. He was nominated by former PBAA president, Stacy Sorokes Wallace '01.

“I think Fred has been on almost every committee of the board,” Wallace said. “He has been active in projects and events, and when he has committed to take on a task, he has always followed through.”

Proper teaches drafting technology at Bradford Area High School and has served the community on the Bradford Area School Board and Bradford City Council. He and his wife, Kim, live in Bradford.

Recent recipients of the Lowery Distinguished Volunteer Award include Chris Luke '94, John Foersnter '79 and Joe Colosimo '94.

Kallenbach has taught accounting at Pitt-Bradford for eight years. Prior to teaching at Pitt-Bradford, he was the controller for St. Bonaventure University in Allegany, N.Y.

Kallenbach has been nominated by several students over the last few years.

“He is an excellent teacher and always provides real world views on subjects within the course,” said Payton Adams '15, echoing comments of other students. “He breaks down and simplifies subject matter and genuinely cares about his students' best interests.”

In addition to his teaching duties, Kallenbach oversees the popular Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program through which students prepare taxes at no cost to lower income individuals and families. He is also an active member of the Pitt-Bradford faculty senate.

He is married, lives in Olean, N.Y., and has six grown children.

Recent recipients of the teaching award are Dr. Jean Truman, associate professor of nursing; Dr. Lauren Yaich, associate professor of biology; and Dr. Mark Kelley, assistant professor of exercise science.
