In-state tuition program extended to Erie County, N.Y.

Qualifying students from Erie County in New York can now pay standard Pennsylvania tuition at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford rather than the higher out-of-state tuition thanks to the Go Beyond NYS Award.

The Go Beyond NYS Award decreases the cost of tuition for qualifying students from the current annual out-of-state rate of $23,268 to the current annual Pennsylvania in-state rate of $12,452.

“This is a great opportunity for students residing in Erie County,” said Dr. Livingston Alexander, Pitt-Bradford's president. “We've strived to make our high-quality college education affordable and accessible for all students who seek to 'go beyond.' This award will make attending Pitt-Bradford even more affordable for Erie County students who are looking for an emphasis on teaching quality, the support of one of the nation's top research universities, and an exceptionally friendly, safe and welcoming campus environment.”

Pitt-Bradford, a Pennsylvania state-related university, is located in Bradford, just six miles from the New York state border. Since the campus is part of the University of Pittsburgh, students who attend Pitt-Bradford earn the renowned University of Pittsburgh degree and have access to the university's vast research resources.  

Officials at Pitt-Bradford created the award because they recognize that many students who live in nearby New York counties may not consider Pitt-Bradford due to out-of-state tuition costs. The award was first available for students living in Allegany, Cattaraugus and Chautauqua counties. Sixty-seven students from those counties took advantage of the award and enrolled at Pitt-Bradford this fall. Based on last year's success, university officials decided to add Erie County this year.

“We're hoping that students from Erie County who may not have thought about us before will come take a look at all Pitt-Bradford has to offer right across the border,” said Alexander Nazemetz, associate vice president of enrollment management and director of admissions.

The award is available to new freshmen and transfer students who enroll full time beginning in fall 2016. Additionally, those students who have already completed their first degree and wish to pursue a second degree on a full-time basis are eligible.

The award is also advantageous for transfer students, Nazemetz said, because its amount is greater than award amounts offered through Pitt-Bradford's merit scholarship program for out-of-state transfer students.

Students can retain the Go Beyond NYS award for a maximum of four years by earning a cumulative grade point average of 2.25 or better at the end of each spring term. The award applies only to spring and fall terms and cannot be used for any courses taken during the summer.
