Student places second in Pennsylvania writing contest

A paper by Jessica Visseau, a 2010 Pitt-Bradford graduate, has taken second place in the Pennsylvania Communication Association’s undergraduate writing competition.

Visseau’s paper, “The Potential Impacts of Televised Direct-to-Consumer Prescription Drug Advertisements on U.S. Society” will be included in the “Top Undergraduate Competitive Papers” panel at the PCA’s convention this fall.

Visseau’s paper explores the advertising tactics used by pharmaceutical companies and their influences on patient-doctor relationships. Visseau concluded that the Food and Drug Administration should provide stricter control of the direct-to-consumer ads or ban them.

Visseau, an English major from Shinglehouse, wrote the paper as an assignment for Mass Media and Society taught by Dr. Flora Wei, assistant professor of communication.

Wei commented on Visseau’s paper. “Jessica impressed me not only by a lucid writing style, but also by her scrupulous learning attitude. Reading her paper is a luxury enjoyment.”

Having graduated from Pitt-Bradford in May, Visseau now teaches eighth grade English at Keystone Junior-Senior High School and is pursuing a Master of Education degree at the University of Pittsburgh.
