Pitt-Bradford will offer new youth camps this year along with a summer enrichment series for high school students and bring back its X-Treme Science Camp.
The new camps are “Adventure Camp,” “Criminal Justice and Forensic Science Camp” and “Pets ’n’ Vets.” All are being offered through the university’s Division of Continuing Education and Regional Development. Registration begins the week of April 1. Payment must be provided at the time of registration. Enrollment is limited.
Adventure Camp for students who have completed ninth, 10th and 11th grades will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 11 through 13. The same camp will be offered for students who’ve completed sixth through eighth grades from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 25 through 27. The cost of the camp is $199 and includes use of equipment, transportation to and from Warren, a T-shirt, water and snacks.
Mick McMillan, director of recreation, intramurals and aquatics at Pitt-Bradford, will teach students how to kayak in the Paul C. Duke III Aquatic Center in the Sport and Fitness Center, then, time permitting, take the kayaks to the Tunungwant Creek for a test. The second day will involve flat-water kayaking at Marilla Reservoir along with hiking, rock climbing and rappelling. On the third day, students will travel to Warren to kayak from the Kinzua Dam to Warren on the Allegheny River.
X-Treme Science Camp, for students who have completed grades 1 through 6, will be held from 8:30 a.m. to noon June 25-29. The cost of the camp is $85 for the first camper and $75 for additional campers in the same family. The fee includes T-shirt, program materials, snacks and drinks.
Students participate in labs and activities dealing with many different areas of science, including plants, birds, stream life, water quality, chemistry, physical science and more.
Criminal Justice and Forensic Science Camp is for students 13 to 18 and will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 18 through 22. The cost is $129, which includes program materials, T-shirt and snacks.
Campers will be exposed to a variety of hands-on methods and strategies used to conduct a criminal investigation. These include an understanding of the criminal justice system, obtaining and writing search/arrest warrants, conducting interviews, taking forensic photographs, securing, collecting and documenting evidence, diagramming a rough sketch, analyzing fingerprints, and writing investigative reports.
The final new camp will be Pets ’n’ Vets, which will be held from 8:30 a.m. to noon July 16 through 18 for children who have completed first, second or third grade, and 1:30 to 5 p.m. July 16 through 18 for children who have completed fourth, fifth or sixth grade. The cost is $69 per camper, which includes program materials, snacks and a T-shirt.
The camp will include various creative and instructional activities centered on children and their pets. Topics include how to approach a domestic animal, safety around animals, pet training, pet health care, and first aid and feeding. Wild and exotic animal care will also be investigated. Hands-on learning will be the primary focus of the camp experience.
High school enrichment courses this summer will include Crime Solving 101, Making Your Own Website, Medical Mysteries – Solved!, Television Studio Production and Live While You’re Dying: The Ways We Deal (and Don’t Deal) with Death.
