Thomas lecture on Lisbon earthquake

Dr. Marvin Thomas, professor of history, will present a multimedia lecture on the Lisbon earthquake of 1755, on Tuesday, April 12.

The lecture starts at 8 p.m. in Rice Auditorium in Fisher Hall. A part of the university’s Spectrum Series, this is the 35th year Thomas has presented his popular historical talk.

In the most devout country in Europe on the Feast of All Saints, while the faithful jammed into the churches and cathedral of Lisbon, an earthquake struck, which was felt as far as North America. What didn’t fall was consumed by an inferno, and a tidal wave drowned thousands seeking refuge at sea.

Teaching at Pitt-Bradford since 1969, Thomas was the recipient of the Pitt-Bradford Alumni Association’s Teaching Excellence Award in 1997. He teaches survey courses across the entire spectrum of European history from the ancient, medieval and renaissance periods through modern history.

He has a doctorate in history from Penn State University, earned a master’s degree in history from Columbia University and a bachelor’s degree in history from Long Island University.
